A Suite of Nine 7-inch Records
Jack Goldstein’s nine-part record series connects the Situationist method of misappropriation with the punk attitude of do-it-yourself. The differently colored vinyl singles, packed in typographically designed covers, draw on the sound databases of Hollywood, with animal noises or sounds of natural forces forming the basic material: on A German Shepherd, a barking dog is heard, and on Two Wrestling Cats, two cats fighting; The Burning Forest contains the recording of a forest fire, and The Tornado that of a whirlwind. Goldstein plays with the sound effects of the entertainment industry, which he passes off as independent compositions and presents as pseudo-original artifacts. This shifts the role of the producing artist towards that of a selecting authority that ironically claims industry samples as its own.
