Wolfgang Müller is the founder of the band Tödliche Doris, which was formed in 1980 and broke up in 1987. Müller grew up in view of the VW car plant in Wolfsburg, in which his father had worked, and his works include reflections on inhuman work on the assembly line. The monotony of the industrial factory, its commercial structures of exploitation and its parallels to the music industry gave Müller the idea of the Wolfsburger Modell zur Herstellung einer unsichtbaren Vinylscheibe (Wolfsburg Model for the Production of an Invisible Vinyl Record): in 1984, Tödliche Doris’s fourth LP appeared, Unser Debut, which was deliberately intended to sound commercial. One year later, the record Sechs went on the market, which was meant to illustrate serious music very artistically. In fact, the tracks of both records were recorded at the same time at the Ata Tak Studio in Düsseldorf. If the respective A- and B-sides of the LPs are played together synchronously, the first invisible vinyl LP in the world is created. The poster Throw away the crutches! serves as instructions and alludes to the de-materialization of music.
