Jutta Koether (Painter)

Workdetails

Work description by Christian Höller

Jutta Koether’s paintings have always maintained a close affinity with themes of pop culture. In the picture Unganzheitssymbole: K, interest is focused completely on the encapsulation of this affinity in abbreviated form. Whereas the director Kenneth Anger had explored the dark sides of subcultural milieus in films such as Scorpio Rising and Kustom Kar Kommandos, Koether in her tribute unsettles such subtexts with her reduced classic language. The letter K, written in white dots on a black, smoky background, is reminiscent of the rivets on classical rocker outfits, while the frame, also consisting of white dots, recalls stages for vaudeville shows or make-up studios. At the same time, the sinister painterly gesture resists any clear classification, because, although a number of allusions are evoked in the (half) monogram, the completion is denied to us.
